You Are Doing Great

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” — Zephaniah 3:17

When was the last time someone told you that you were doing a good job and actually meant it?

Do you believe God is proud of you right now not the future version, not the improved version, but the current one?

Before I get started if you enjoy my Daily Bible newsletter please consider supporting my work for only $5 a month here:

Nobody is going to write you a card for this. There is no ceremony for the person who got up this morning when getting up was harder than it sounds. No award for the parent who showed up for their kids on a day when they had nothing left.

No standing ovation for the person who chose patience when they wanted to lose it. No trophy for the one who kept praying when prayer felt like talking to a wall. No recognition for the person who kept showing up to a faith that has been dry for months and showed up anyway.

Nobody sees most of what you’re doing. And the things nobody sees are usually the hardest things you do.

So I want to say something to you today that I mean completely:

You are doing great.

Not perfectly and not without struggle. Not in the way that looks impressive on the outside. But in the way that actually matters the real, honest, showing-up-anyway, refusing-to-quit way you are doing great.

And God sees every single moment of it.

The Sermon

Zephaniah 3:17 is one of the most overlooked verses in the entire Bible. It sits in a minor prophet most people have never read and it contains one of the most staggering images of God anywhere in Scripture.

He will rejoice over you with singing.

Not tolerate you, not manage you, not wait with arms crossed for you to become a better version of yourself before He responds with something warmer.

The original Hebrew word carries the sense of spinning with joy the kind of delight that cannot stay still. The image is of a God who looks at His people and is so moved by what He sees that He breaks into song.

And who is He singing over? The people of Zephaniah’s day who had failed repeatedly, who had wandered, who had returned to the same sins again and again, who were nowhere near the version of themselves they were supposed to be.

He sang over them anyway.

He is singing over you right now. Not the version of you that has it together. The current version the tired one, the struggling one, the one who cried in the car last week and pulled themselves together before walking through the door, the one who has been trying harder than anyone knows and wondering if it’s making any difference at all.

That is who the singing is for.

The Real Word

I want to speak to the person who has been quietly wondering if they’re enough.

The parent who loves their children fiercely and still goes to bed most nights convinced they got it wrong today. The spouse who is trying to love well in a marriage that is harder than they expected.

The person in recovery who has made it another day and has no one to tell. The Christian who keeps showing up to a faith that doesn’t always feel like it’s producing anything who keeps praying, keeps reading, keeps choosing God on the dry days as well as the full ones.

You are enough not because you’ve earned it because God says so. And His evaluation of you is the one that is actually accurate the one based on full information, full knowledge, full love.

The voice that tells you that you’re failing that you’re behind, not enough, doing it wrong, disappointing everyone that voice is not God’s. God’s voice, according to Zephaniah 3:17, is a song. And it is singing over you.

Here is what God sees when He looks at you today:

He sees someone who is still here still trying and still choosing Him imperfectly in an imperfect life. And He is not disappointed in the imperfection. He is singing over the faithfulness the small, unglamorous, nobody-noticed faithfulness of a person who keeps getting up.

That is enough and it has always been enough and it always will be.

What This Changes

When you genuinely believe that God is singing over you not as a concept but as a lived reality it changes the way you carry everything else.

The shame loses its grip. The comparison loses its power. The relentless performance the exhausting project of trying to be enough for everyone around you begins to loosen its hold. Because you are no longer operating from a deficit.

You are operating from the settled knowledge of a person who is fully known, fully seen, and fully delighted in by the only One whose evaluation ultimately matters.

You stop trying to earn what you already have. And that freedom the freedom of the person who has stopped performing for an audience and started living from a place of being loved is one of the most transformative things available to a human being.

You are doing great. God is singing over you. Let that land somewhere real today.

A Real Story

Thomas had been a youth pastor for eight years. He poured everything into his kids his time, his energy, his faith. And most days he went home wondering if any of it was reaching anyone.

One Sunday after a service that felt flat and disconnected he sat in his car in the parking lot and said honestly to God: I don’t know if I’m doing any good. I don’t know if any of this is landing. I am tired and I don’t know how to keep going.

He said what came next wasn’t audible. Just a settling. A sense that landed somewhere underneath the exhaustion. And the thought that came with it was simple:

I see you. And I am pleased.

Not because the service was great. Not because the numbers were impressive. Because Thomas had shown up faithfully, loved genuinely, and given what he had and the God who sees in secret had seen every moment of it.

He said: I went back in and set up for next week. Because somehow that was enough. Being seen by the One who matters was enough to keep going.

Reflection Questions

  1. What have you been doing faithfully that nobody else sees that God has seen every moment of?

  2. What would change in how you live if you genuinely believed God was singing over you right now not the future you, the current one?

  3. Write down three things you have done this week that were hard and that nobody acknowledged. Acknowledge them yourself. And then receive God’s acknowledgment of them.

Today’s Prayer:Lord, I needed to hear this today more than I realized. I have been measuring myself by the wrong things by what other people see, by what I haven’t yet become, by the gap between who I am and who I think I should be. Today I want to receive what You actually say. That You delight in me.

That You rejoice over me. That the singing is for the current, imperfect, still-trying version of me not the finished one. Let that be more real to me today than the voice that says I’m not enough. And help me carry the knowledge that I am seen really, fully, lovingly seen into every hard moment of this week. I am Yours. And apparently that makes You want to sing. I am still learning to believe that. Help me. Amen.
